To symbolize the creation of Earl Grey Tea, we have created a heraldic device-a shield, containing the British Lion, The Chinese Dragon, with Bergamot Oranges, on an azure field. It is Charles, the second Earl Grey (1764-1845), to whom we have to thank for this delicious blend. Or, rather, the grateful beneficiaries of a noble act by a member of his envoy to China when he was Prime Minister of England (1830-1834). The legend is that a member of his mission saved the life of a Chinese official receiving them. As a token of his appreciation, Earl Grey was given a packet of tea, and the recipe. He later had it blended for him in England, and eventually the family allowed it to be made for public sale.
