Description
To symbolize the creation of Earl Grey Tea, we have created a heraldic device-a shield, containing the British Lion, The Chinese Dragon, with Bergamot Oranges, on an azure field. It is Charles, the second Earl Grey (1764-1845), to whom we have to thank for this delicious blend. Or, rather, the grateful beneficiaries of a noble act by a member of his envoy to China when he was Prime Minister of England (1830-1834). The legend is that a member of his mission saved the life of a Chinese official receiving them. As a token of his appreciation, Earl Grey was given a packet of tea, and the recipe. He later had it blended for him in England, and eventually the family allowed it to be made for public sale. Earl Grey tea is a blend of China black and Indian teas, is always flavored with oil of bergamot, a lemony flavor made from the peel of the Canton orange.
